Missing Children

Alexis Currie

Peter Currie, who killed his two-year-old daughter Alexis on March 9, 2002, pleaded guilty to second degree murder on March 26, 2003 and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 18 years.

Currie had been left by his wife in 2001 after he assaulted her. He murdered Alexis during his first unsupervised access visit with her and her 5-year-old sister. He failed to return the girls on time, and the day after killing Alexis and leaving her body in a wooded area in Durham Region, he dropped her older sister off near her grandparents' house and hid out in a motel until police found him. He waited 5 days before talking to police and leading them to Alexis's body.

Currie maintained the position that he had been unfairly denied access to his daughters and that this contributed to the state of mind that led him to kill Alexis. He told one police officer: "You don't know what it's like losing your kids because of something you didn't do."

It is not as though Currie was limited in his access to his daughters for no reason. He was convicted of assaulting his wife, who felt that it was not safe for him to be alone with his children. She was successful in limiting his access for a short period of time, and in his first unsupervised time with his daughters, he killed Alexis, which would seem adequate proof of the validity of Mrs. Currie's concern.

There is no prison sentence that can undo the murder of Alexis Currie or the devastating impact of the murder on her mother and sister. There can only be hope that Peter Currie's actions will assist other mothers who argue for restricted or supervised access to keep their children safe from abusive fathers.
